Internist and Sleep Medicine Specialist Dr. Lisa Shives heads up our Weight Management and Wellness Program. Dr. Shives is on the forefront of the integration of Sleep and Weight Management and is board certified in Obesity Medicine. Research shows not only that weight gain often leads to sleep disorders, but sleep problems often contribute to weight gain and the frustrating inability to lose weight. She has assembled an expert team including exercise physiologist Magdalena Wojtowicz, MS, LMT, and a behavioral health psychologist.

 

The program addresses the underlying causes of chronic health problems. Our approach follows a low-glycemic load food plan, which is consistent with the most current research for reversing inflammation and chronic conditions. This plan is not intended to be a test of your willpower: this is all about change in eating habits. You will not be hungry on our weight management program.

  • Knowledge
    A healthy lifestyle starts with the knowledge to make informed decisions that impact your health everyday.
  • Balanced Eating
    Balanced eating habits have a direct influence on excess insulin production, body composition, and disease prevention. We will assist you in meal planning for life.
  • Regular Activity/Exercise
    A regular program of aerobic, strength training and flexibility exercises has been shown to reverse insulin resistance, increase vitality, and reduce the risk of many disease states.

The program also features these key components:

  • BIA
    First, we perform a BIA or Body Impedance Analysis to give us a baseline showing your current fat mass, muscle mass, and body water percentage. From this we can interpret your current metabolic condition. This test will be repeated as necessary to reveal how your body is changing so we can modify your individual plan as necessary.
  • Blood Chemistry
    Checking the chemical markers can diagnose or predict your risk for metabolic disorders that are linked to weight gain, such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular, diabetes, and high cholesterol. These disorders could affect your health and your ability to lose fat.
  • Sleep Test
    Given the connection between poor sleep and weight gain, a sleep test may be necessary.
  • Review of Medication
    We will review your current medications, as certain medications can inhibit weight loss or contribute to weight gain. We will also look at your supplements such as vitamins and herbs, to make sure they are safe and effective. As you are reversing your disease states, we may need to reduce or ultimately eliminate your medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol.
  • Measurements
    Measurements will be taken to track progress. We will follow weight, BMI, waist circumference, fat and lean muscle mass percentages, as well as blood pressure and cholestoral levels.
  • Exercise Prescription
    An individualized exercise program will be designed by our exercise physiologist to best suit your unique situation.
  • Patient Education & Progress Tools
    We will supply you with the tools that are useful for weight management.
  • Stress Management
    An aspect of the program focuses on the behavioral, cognitive, and emotional aspects of weight issues. Mindful eating is emphasized.
