National Sleep Foundation Task Force Visit to Capitol Hill
As a Board Member of the National Sleep Foundation, Dr. Shives and other sleep experts met with legislators to address issues of public health and stricter regulations on screening for sleep disorders, April 2014. As the tragedy at Fort Hood illustrates, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), severe anxiety and other issues faced by veterans pose a serious threat. Sleep experts are urging politicians to recognize the connection with these issues and sleep health.
The team is also urging the Surgeon General’s office to make sleep health a priority and is asking the Department of Health and Human Services to include at least one sleep question in the Electronic Health Record monitor American sleep habits and gather data on the extent of poor sleep health and its connection with diabetes, stroke and many other health problems.

Dr. Shives appears in the debut issue of Dr. Oz’s new magazine, The Good Life: “Our core body temperature ruyn on a 24-hour cycle, dropping off at around 9 or 10 o’clock at night and continuing to go down until it reaches its lowest temperature about five hours into sleep.” The March/April issue of The Good Life is now availble on newstands.

Dr. Shives Discusses Sleep Disorders on Sirius Radio
In a live interview on WHUR 96.3 in Washington, DC, and Sirius XM 141 in January, Dr. Lisa Shives talked about sleep apnea, insomnia and sleep deprivation in our busy 24-hour society. One producer told his story of getting diagnosed and treated for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and how much better he feels now that he uses his CPAP machine. She also took calls from the listeners including someone who struggles with insomnia. Another caller could not tolerate her CPAP machine and wanted options. Dr. Shives directed them to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine to find an accredited sleep center near them
